A striking and generously scaled mid-19th century giltwood overmantle mirror, dating to circa 1850. This richly carved and sculptural piece features a large oval central plate within an elaborately moulded frame, adorned with bold scrollwork and foliate embellishments. The mirror is flanked by scrolling side supports which anchor the piece visually and enhance its architectural presence.
Executed in gesso over wood and finished in a warm, time-softened gilt tone, the frame displays beautifully aged patina throughout, with subtle wear and minor losses consistent with its age — all contributing to its authentic antique character. The crest is crowned with a stylised cartouche flanked by acanthus flourishes, lending the mirror a sense of grandeur and refinement.
Measuring an impressive 147.5 cm wide by 144.5 cm high, this mirror makes a commanding focal point above a fireplace, sideboard, or console, equally suited to classical interiors or more eclectic decorative schemes. A fine example of Victorian decorative arts, notable for its scale, quality of carving, and enduring aesthetic appeal.
